The women do not seek to control their partners; they just want the freedom to behave however they choose to. Telling the stories from the characters point of view makes it clear that they both feel threatened by their partners, and wish to regain the lead role they should have as the men in their relationships. The men feel threatened by this, so in order to feel better about themselves they kill their lover.
